The Truth About Emotions

Many people think of emotions as something intangible that seem to come out of nowhere. In this lesson, we look at what emotions actually are. Understanding just how tangible emotions are will powerfully support your Emotional Intelligence.

Emotions Defined
Each primary emotion is bringing you a particular message. It also has a physical activation and an energetic component. It helps to think of the energy of each emotion as moving in a direction. For example, fear is inward moving, it makes your body contract. Joy is outward moving, it is expansive and makes you feel open.

What follows is a list of the seven Primary Emotions and essential information about them:
- The meaning – some will cover both the instinctual and primary versions
- Common Issues
- How it manifests in the body
- The type of action it wants you to take
- Feelings that are based on the emotion
As you read through the definition of each emotion, try to recall a time when you felt that emotion and the sensations you experienced in your body.
